Advice: Where Do Excuses Originate From??

Photo Credit: www.americasbestpics.com Hello Everyone! Let's have our best foot forward on this Tuesday morning?? Here's another reminder that my first children's book entitled, "Not All Girls Play With Dolls" is now live on Amazon in both paperback and as a Kindle, an iTunes e-book, and for Nook via Barnes & Noble!! As of today, the Barnes & Noble Nook e-book is still pending approval. I might as well share that my hashtags are #LeslieMJasper, #ConstructionTales, and #VerballyDisastrous. For this blog post, I'm sharing with you some more good 'ole fashioned Quora advice. I'm sharing with you not one but two Q & A's!! One piece of advice is a smart ass retort to a posed question. I will let you read it down below since it's simple. I also opted to choose the topic subject matter on the origination of excuses. As a young kid, I had no patience for anyone offering excuses. My father was a tough dude and he didn't want to hear any excuses whatsoever! I saw a meme recently about holding a flashlight for my father that causes me to not have hurt feelings. :) I grew up in an environment that was intolerant of excuses. You had to be on point at all times or you will get your ass kicked! For many years, I adopted that same sentiment. However, once I had sons, I learned to soften up my approach over time. Sometimes, my eldest will joke and say that someone kidnapped his mother. The boys taught me patience and tolerance that I never had as a young woman. The older I get, the less hard I am on a variety of things in my life. Earning some major aches and pains along the way have served as a major distraction for me. We all experience hard times to where a thing, such as excuses, is not a big deal in the big scheme of things. As an older woman with many life experiences, I'm more forgiving of people who are struggling with life. There are many reasons as to why a person doesn't fully fulfill an obligation. Once you add kids, mortgage, a major crisis, death of beloved family members, heartache, aches and pains and huge set backs, little things become stupid stuff that don't hold the same weight. Once a person loses their passion for life, they are no longer concerned if you do not like their excuses. One has to ask if your harping on their poor excuses truly has any value or not? Perhaps there is more value with trying to gain an understanding of a person's plight versus continuing to break a broken person. It certainly makes sense that a person is not up to the challenge when they are carrying the weight of the world on their shoulders. Answering to another person about excuses just adds to the load. There is great value in the person who gets kicked down in the dirt and then proceeds to later rise up like the Phoenix. Not only do they rise, they go from giving 50% to 110% after having a major break through. We are all on a different paths and have different experiences that shape our views in life. There is major victory to get out of the "poor me" mindset and shift into the "warrior" mindset. May God help you if the reverse happens. I came from a family culture where you give 110% and anything less is just unacceptable. I now realize that, if you have emotional or physical impairments, giving 110% may not even be realistic. If today is a bad day, just try your best to get out of bed tomorrow and do much better tomorrow. For many of us, God has blessed us with great circumstances that gives us a home field advantage over others. For others, they are not aware that they have it good or it could always be much worse. Wherever you are in life, just know that you got this if you just focus and work harder each day. Instead of using excuses as to why you can't, focus on how you can make it happen. Use the excuses you do have as fuel to figure out how to plan and do better. Over time, excuses will become a thing of the past. I sincerely wish you well wherever you are in life. Without entirely giving away the store, go ahead and check out the question and my response down below: POSED QUESTION #1: "What’s a good response to “Don’t do anything I wouldn’t do”?" -By Onna Ward MY RESPONSE to #1: "Now that would certainly leave it WIDE open!! :) #ConstructionTales #VerballyDisastrous" -By Leslie M. Jasper https://www.quora.com/What-s-a-good-response-to-Don-t-do-anything-I-wouldn-t-do/answer/Leslie-Jasper-3?prompt_topic_bio=1 POSED QUESTION #2: "Where do excuses originate from?" -By Devin S MY RESPONSE TO #2: "I believe that excuses either originate from either a genuine unforeseen obstacle or just a complete lack of effort. With the complete lack of effort, you are now trying to justify your subpar behavior with empty words. An unforeseen problem can arise from a lack of experience with being able to anticipate future problems. An unforeseen problem can also pop up as a never experienced before issue even by the most experienced people on the team. If a person doesn’t do any form of strategic planning, then expect to run into some unforeseen hurdles. On the other hand, a person who does things half ass and now has to answer for their lack of efforts, they need to now do some explaining. Excuses during this moment sound like the lazy person is grasping for straws in order to account for their lack of accountability. For many, lazy people are the scourge of the Earth. Then again, there is a reason as to why this person chooses to not give 110%. They may very well be hiding physical or mental limitations that impede their progress. They may very well hope to fake it until they make it. There are many folks who do not even want to try to determine the exact steps of a task and just choose to wing it. When you do that, you are bound to run into problems that lead to offering excuses. Excuses may also very well be your way of verbally articulating, after the fact, as to your assessment of what exactly went wrong. Hopefully, the person issuing the excuses will use the feedback as fuel to get back on track and do better. On the other hand, even the most prepared person on the planet can encounter mistakes and unplanned road blocks. The older I get, I believe that not every problem is a major crisis. You can fall off the horse and get back on at any point. There are redeeming qualities for people who fall on their face, get back up, and become warriors. If anything, if you are not up to par, take the criticism on the chin, keep it moving, and do better. To many people, excuses sound like nails on a chalkboard. To others, excuses sound like barriers to support their bad behavior and poor foresight. There are some rather hard nosed folks who will say that there are no excuses allowed!! If you take a position like that, you damn well need to make sure you are perfect yourself. May you have great luck during your journey in life and have your excuses down to a bare minimum. The best lessons in life are your failures. #ConstructionTales #VerballyDisastrous" -By Leslie M. This is short story #11 entitled, "Juggling Motherhood & Working With The Tools". This short story covers my life as a widowed, single mother in the era when I juggled both motherhood and my career as a journeywoman electrician. I share the various challenges I faced and lessons learned along the way. The previous short story is entitled: #10: "Early Life Lessons & Characters To Meet As An Apprentice". I decided to write about some life lessons such as guarding your personal information, managing nasty rumors, combating sexual harassment, gender discrimination, and racism. Overall, the construction culture has improved dramatically over the past 25-years. Developing both a thick skin and a sharp tongue are key tools needed to survive various jobsite antics. I hope you learn something from this short story. There are more to come. These short stories are now also available as Verbally Disastrous podcast episodes.
