Advice: Is The Truth Actually Unkind??

Photo Credit: www.themindsjournal.com Hello Everyone! Now, how's your Thursday morning going for ya?? Thankfully, after a cold start earlier this week, the weather is gradually warming up to spring temperatures. What's happening on your side of the globe today? I'm sharing yet AGAIN that my first children's book entitled, "Not All Girls Play With Dolls" is now live on Amazon in both paperback and as a Kindle, an iTunes e-book, and for Nook via Barnes & Noble!! As of today, the Barnes & Noble Nook e-book is STILL pending approval. Check out my standard brand hashtags that are #LeslieMJasper, #ConstructionTales, and #VerballyDisastrous. For this blog post, I'm delivering to you even more Quora advice. This subject matter may cause us to think a little deeper than normal. This next round of Quora advice being delivered to you is on what causes an "always honest" person to be unkind? As the above photo says, there is nothing unkind about the truth unless you are living a lie. I do believe that the truth can only be veiled in darkness for only so long. Eventually, the truth comes right out to the light when you least expect it. In what situations would the truth spill out as unkind? A person's momentary bad choice that is now shaped immortally as an ugly truth? I genuinely wish people would put more thoughts into their actions than they do thinking about what to put on the grill for dinner. Good, bad, or ugly, you should ride solidly with your choices. People want to make choices then get mad and/or emotional when they are questioned later on by the Monday night quarterback. Many choices are made with limited information and major emotions on the spur of the moment. Armed with that knowledge, just know that they will be scrutinized heavily by the "perfect people" later on. Just laugh, take the "L", and keep it moving. Just maybe it will motivate you to approach the situation differently in the future. An action that has more than one way of viewing it? Some sneaky behavior that was done in the dead of night yet had one set of eyes on it and now the entire world knows about it? Own each choice and be ready to use humor as a tool to laugh at yourself and diffuse the emotional bomb. We all make mistakes and not all decisions are perfect. As I have shared in my Quora response, the unkindness of the truth comes right down to one's intention. Not only your intention but how is your intention translated to the other involved parties? Once everyone knows that you have bad intentions with the truth, it is no longer about the truth and more so about your bad intentions. The world would be a better place if people don't wake up and choose violence or bad manipulative intentions. What's your position on the topic? Are you the sensitive one to the truth? Is telling the truth your super power? Do you lose respect for people who cave into others emotional hang ups and pull back from the truth in response? The older I get, I have realized that not all need to fall on the truth sword. This is especially true if the truth is not going to do much to change the dynamics. In my younger years, I used to strongly believe that all folks should be held accountable for their words and actions. There were key people in my life, when I was younger, where I felt totally compelled to have them own their mistakes. Their response was to try to avoid me unless they wanted money. In the end, they never owned up to their behavior and passed away. Thinking back, what was accomplished by forcing a person to own their behavior? How do you make up for delayed ownership and lost time? How many times can you apologize before the situation feels settled? It takes an experience like that to realize that the juice wasn't worth the squeeze. We should have moved on from the truth (the person repeatedly dodged the truth) since alot of time was wasted due to not getting past sour feelings. I've learned that life is entirely too short to hang your hat gaining acknowledgement of the "truth". The other person perceived me as being "unkind" for constantly bringing up the "truth". Years later, I think, "what was I looking for? What did I gain for pushing for the acknowledgement of the truth?" Yes, I have some personal experience with this topic. That was a major lesson learned far too late and after the fact. Wisdom is gained via mistakes over the course of many years. This scenario is totally based upon perspective as to who is "right". For some, they would agree that the person didn't work hard enough to make up for their absence. For others, they would say that I harped on forcing down the truth down this person's neck for far too long. What's your take on an honest person being considered to be unkind? What is your experience with this matter? As I have stated in previous posts, I'm willing to be wrong on my thought process. What is your interpretation of this topic? If you have a totally different thought process, by all means share it. You can share your perspective by dropping it down in the comment section below. Now, without thinking further, go ahead and check out the question and my response down below: POSED QUESTION: "What might cause an "always honest" person to be unkind?" -By Judith Engelstad MY RESPONSE: "Well, as young kids, we were always told to tell the truth. That was pounded into me relentlessly as a kid. I took that direction as face value on how to conduct myself as a kid, teen, and adult. As an adult, I find it weird how the truth can be considered as “unkind”. To me, that is some emotional Jedi mind tricks. To me, there is nothing better than an always honest person. You will always know exactly where they are and where they come from. An honest person offers facts since that is exactly what they are. This honest person doesn’t withhold the facts based upon the emotional turmoil that can be stirred up as a result of the cold, hard facts. If you don’t like the feelings that come from the facts, then perhaps you should change up your moves. For this reason, the truth is a double-edged sword. The truth is always sought after. However, some truths that are intended to reveal the needed details end up being perceived to be painful and unkind by some. The truth can be rather rough and unkind since it is raw and doesn’t consider emotions. If you make moves and don’t like when they come to light as facts, whose fault is that? If you do it, you should own it. You don’t have to soak in those emotions and wear them as a badge. You just assess it, own it, apologize if you have to, and keep it moving. The unkind truth should motivate you to do better moving forward. If the only thing you see is the ugliness of the truth, is that your problem and not the messenger’s problem? In some instances, I do see the value in not revealing the truth. If the person you are revealing the truth to will act out with violence towards others while absolutely nothing changes, then what is the point of sharing the truth? The person acting out violently sure has manipulating, controlling behavior. They know that if they react violently, then it will keep the truth from coming to the surface and keep everyone in line. It’s then wise to keep your distance from those types of people. At that point, is the truth actually unkind or is the person being unkind? This depends on your perspective and life experiences that mold your thought process. I believe that the unkind part of the truth is based upon intention. Let’s consider this line of thinking for a moment. If you intend to hurt a person with the truth and the other party knows your intention, then you are no longer telling the truth. Instead, you are using the truth as a weapon to manipulate the other party through their emotions. If you are just speaking the truth and unaware of the emotional impact, is it considered unkind or is it just the facts? The answer lies within your perception. May you be as cautious with others as you can in order to avoid the emotional pitfalls that come from the truth. Then again, you can’t possibly avoid the sorrowful trap of an emotionally laden person. Some people are looking to use emotions in order to excuse their otherwise bad behavior and portray the victim. It’s terrible to be caught up in another person’s victimhood. You become a pawn in their game. I wish you much luck on navigating around the elusive truth bombs! :) #ConstructionTales #VerballyDisastrous" -By Leslie M. Advice: Strike The Shepherd Metaphor

Photo Credit: www.artuk.org Hello Everyone! Keep making the best out of our hump day Wednesday afternoon?? Here's yet ANOTHER reminder that my first children's book entitled, "Not All Girls Play With Dolls" is now live on Amazon in both paperback and as a Kindle, an iTunes e-book, and for Nook via Barnes & Noble!! As of today, the Barnes & Noble Nook e-book is STILL pending approval. Check out my standard brand hashtags that are #LeslieMJasper, #ConstructionTales, and #VerballyDisastrous. For this blog post, I'm delivering to you some more Quora advice. This next round of Quora advice is my interpretation of a phrase. The phrase offered in the question is, "strike the shepherd and the sheep will scatter". The same person, as the previous advice blog post from today, is posing another question and asking the meaning of this next phrase. I firmly believe that this phrase is quite direct in it's suggestion. There is much truth in how wiping out the leader will cause the followers to scatter. Each person is capable of being a follower. However, not every follower is equipped to be a leader. With leadership comes great responsibility. A leader is necessary to guide the vulnerable. Even the Bible speaks about the importance of the shepherd. There are many qualities that a leader must possess in order to convince others to follow them. A leader exudes confidence and is tapped into the culture of followers. Leaders are able to lead others with a comprehensive strategy to dominate and win. The followers need to also be fairly confident in the ability of their leader. A follower will put all of their faith and energy into following the chosen leader. In a hierarchy, I don't think they choose alternate leaders. I believe that there is one chosen leader without much thought into a back-up leader. This is partly due to another alternate could be seen as a threat to the current leadership. Why have another chosen leader waiting in the wings? However, I'm willing to be wrong on this thought process. What is your interpretation of this thought process? If you have a different take, I'd love to hear it. Go ahead and drop your interpretation down in the comment section below. Now, without thinking further, go ahead and check out the question and my response down below: POSED QUESTION: "What is the meaning of the phrase "strike the shepherd and the sheep will scatter"?" -By Rose Anne Campbell MY RESPONSE: "Here is another interesting metaphor to digest and interpret. I interpret this phrase to mean that if you take out the leader of any group, the people following the leader will all go their separate ways. Once the followers scatter, the threat dissolves. Not everyone you run into is a leader. There are way more followers in life than leaders. Being a leader requires courage, strength, determination, confidence, a clear game plan, etc. Strong leaders that followers are confident to follow are not in a large abundance. This is why taking out the shepherd is a big deal. Sadly, there are not a bunch of ready made leadership replacements. May you have much luck and success along your path! #ConstructionTales #VerballyDisastrous" -By Leslie M. Advice: Meaning Of A Snake Phrase...

Photo Credit: www.verywellhealth.com Hello Everyone! Hopefully, you are making the best out of our hump day Wednesday afternoon?? Here's yet ANOTHER reminder that my first children's book entitled, "Not All Girls Play With Dolls" is now live on Amazon in both paperback and as a Kindle, an iTunes e-book, and for Nook via Barnes & Noble!! As of today, the Barnes & Noble Nook e-book is STILL pending approval. Check out my standard brand hashtags that are #LeslieMJasper, #ConstructionTales, and #VerballyDisastrous. For this blog post, I'm delivering to you some more Quora advice. This round of Quora advice is my interpretation of a phrase. The phrase offered in the question is, "justice is just like a snake, it only bites those without shoes". The person posing the question is asking the meaning of that phrase. I would think that this phrase is a metaphor. The metaphor is on getting punished for not being properly prepared. If you are not willing to take steps to be prepared, well then prepare to get your lazy ass bit by a snake...LOL!! If I walked in a jungle with flip flops, I am not properly dressed. Allowing myself to be exposed makes me vulnerable for attack by predators. On the other hand, go into the jungle wearing a suit of armor is overkill. While it will protect you from harm, you will get worn out from carrying the extra weight. You may even become dehydrated from sweating in that big suit of metal. I'm not saying that a person wearing flip flops deserves to be bitten by a snake. You should not be surprised if it happens. What is your interpretation of the phrase? If you have a different vision, I'd love to hear it. Go ahead and drop your interpretation down in the comment section below. Now, without chatter, go ahead and check out the question and my response down below: POSED QUESTION: "What is the meaning of the phrase "justice is just like a snake, it only bites those without shoes"?" -By Rose Anne Campbell MY RESPONSE: "I interpret that phrase to mean that justice comes hard and fierce for a person who is not properly prepared for the day. If you don’t do your homework and try to wing things, that lack of effort can bite you in the a$$ later on. If you walk through the jungle with only flip flops on, don’t be surprised if the fire ants and snakes come out of hiding to chomp on your toes. May you always be properly prepared for the day and able to handle any situation. #ConstructionTales #VerballyDisastrous" -By Leslie M. Jasper https://www.quora.com/What-is-the-meaning-of-the-phrase-justice-is-just-like-a-snake-it-only-bites-those-without-shoes/answer/Leslie-Jasper-3?prompt_topic_bio=1 Thanks for accidentally/on purpose colliding into my advice content today. My goal is to be helpful to someone out there on the today. With this phrase, we both learned something new. After all, learning is growing. Let me know, in the comment section below, if you either like or dislike my advice? Make sure to explain exactly as to your position. I'm interested in hearing the other side of the coin. I'm also sharing my latest (8) podcast episodes that are listed down below from The Verbally Disastrous Podcast, via links for Spotify & YouTube down below. Advice: Where Do Excuses Originate From??

Photo Credit: www.americasbestpics.com Hello Everyone! Let's have our best foot forward on this Tuesday morning?? Here's another reminder that my first children's book entitled, "Not All Girls Play With Dolls" is now live on Amazon in both paperback and as a Kindle, an iTunes e-book, and for Nook via Barnes & Noble!! As of today, the Barnes & Noble Nook e-book is still pending approval. I might as well share that my hashtags are #LeslieMJasper, #ConstructionTales, and #VerballyDisastrous. For this blog post, I'm sharing with you some more good 'ole fashioned Quora advice. I'm sharing with you not one but two Q & A's!! One piece of advice is a smart ass retort to a posed question. I will let you read it down below since it's simple. I also opted to choose the topic subject matter on the origination of excuses. As a young kid, I had no patience for anyone offering excuses. My father was a tough dude and he didn't want to hear any excuses whatsoever! I saw a meme recently about holding a flashlight for my father that causes me to not have hurt feelings. :) I grew up in an environment that was intolerant of excuses. You had to be on point at all times or you will get your ass kicked! For many years, I adopted that same sentiment. However, once I had sons, I learned to soften up my approach over time. Sometimes, my eldest will joke and say that someone kidnapped his mother. The boys taught me patience and tolerance that I never had as a young woman. The older I get, the less hard I am on a variety of things in my life. Earning some major aches and pains along the way have served as a major distraction for me. We all experience hard times to where a thing, such as excuses, is not a big deal in the big scheme of things. As an older woman with many life experiences, I'm more forgiving of people who are struggling with life. There are many reasons as to why a person doesn't fully fulfill an obligation. Once you add kids, mortgage, a major crisis, death of beloved family members, heartache, aches and pains and huge set backs, little things become stupid stuff that don't hold the same weight. Once a person loses their passion for life, they are no longer concerned if you do not like their excuses. One has to ask if your harping on their poor excuses truly has any value or not? Perhaps there is more value with trying to gain an understanding of a person's plight versus continuing to break a broken person. It certainly makes sense that a person is not up to the challenge when they are carrying the weight of the world on their shoulders. Answering to another person about excuses just adds to the load. There is great value in the person who gets kicked down in the dirt and then proceeds to later rise up like the Phoenix. Not only do they rise, they go from giving 50% to 110% after having a major break through. We are all on a different paths and have different experiences that shape our views in life. There is major victory to get out of the "poor me" mindset and shift into the "warrior" mindset. May God help you if the reverse happens. I came from a family culture where you give 110% and anything less is just unacceptable. I now realize that, if you have emotional or physical impairments, giving 110% may not even be realistic. If today is a bad day, just try your best to get out of bed tomorrow and do much better tomorrow. For many of us, God has blessed us with great circumstances that gives us a home field advantage over others. For others, they are not aware that they have it good or it could always be much worse. Wherever you are in life, just know that you got this if you just focus and work harder each day. Instead of using excuses as to why you can't, focus on how you can make it happen. Use the excuses you do have as fuel to figure out how to plan and do better. Over time, excuses will become a thing of the past. I sincerely wish you well wherever you are in life. Without entirely giving away the store, go ahead and check out the question and my response down below: POSED QUESTION #1: "What’s a good response to “Don’t do anything I wouldn’t do”?" -By Onna Ward MY RESPONSE to #1: "Now that would certainly leave it WIDE open!! :) #ConstructionTales #VerballyDisastrous" -By Leslie M. Jasper https://www.quora.com/What-s-a-good-response-to-Don-t-do-anything-I-wouldn-t-do/answer/Leslie-Jasper-3?prompt_topic_bio=1 POSED QUESTION #2: "Where do excuses originate from?" -By Devin S MY RESPONSE TO #2: "I believe that excuses either originate from either a genuine unforeseen obstacle or just a complete lack of effort. With the complete lack of effort, you are now trying to justify your subpar behavior with empty words. An unforeseen problem can arise from a lack of experience with being able to anticipate future problems. An unforeseen problem can also pop up as a never experienced before issue even by the most experienced people on the team. If a person doesn’t do any form of strategic planning, then expect to run into some unforeseen hurdles. On the other hand, a person who does things half ass and now has to answer for their lack of efforts, they need to now do some explaining. Excuses during this moment sound like the lazy person is grasping for straws in order to account for their lack of accountability. For many, lazy people are the scourge of the Earth. Then again, there is a reason as to why this person chooses to not give 110%. They may very well be hiding physical or mental limitations that impede their progress. They may very well hope to fake it until they make it. There are many folks who do not even want to try to determine the exact steps of a task and just choose to wing it. When you do that, you are bound to run into problems that lead to offering excuses. Excuses may also very well be your way of verbally articulating, after the fact, as to your assessment of what exactly went wrong. Hopefully, the person issuing the excuses will use the feedback as fuel to get back on track and do better. On the other hand, even the most prepared person on the planet can encounter mistakes and unplanned road blocks. The older I get, I believe that not every problem is a major crisis. You can fall off the horse and get back on at any point. There are redeeming qualities for people who fall on their face, get back up, and become warriors. If anything, if you are not up to par, take the criticism on the chin, keep it moving, and do better. To many people, excuses sound like nails on a chalkboard. To others, excuses sound like barriers to support their bad behavior and poor foresight. There are some rather hard nosed folks who will say that there are no excuses allowed!! If you take a position like that, you damn well need to make sure you are perfect yourself. May you have great luck during your journey in life and have your excuses down to a bare minimum. The best lessons in life are your failures. #ConstructionTales #VerballyDisastrous" -By Leslie M. Advice: The Meaning Of A Compliment??

Photo Credit: The Verbally Disastrous Podcast- (2) New Episodes On Spotify Hello Everyone! How we doing on our Monday afternoon?? Here's a gentle reminder that my first children's book entitled, "Not All Girls Play With Dolls" is now live on Amazon in both paperback and as a Kindle, an iTunes e-book, and for Nook via Barnes & Noble!! As of today, the Barnes & Noble Nook e-book is still pending approval. I'm also sharing that my hashtags are #LeslieMJasper, #ConstructionTales, and #VerballyDisastrous. For this blog post, I'm sharing with you some more good 'ole fashioned Quora advice. I opted to choose the subject matter on the meaning behind compliments. I don't personally believe that there is a mystery behind a compliment. You just take the compliment, graciously say thank you, and keep it moving. The only time I would be concerned would be if the person was creepy and stalkerish in nature. Without knowing what was complimented, it's hard to analyze the situation further. How do you react to compliments? Do you come from a background where they didn't exist? If so, it would make sense why you would have questioned if further. A person who gets compliments all of the time would not think much further than the surface. I'm aware that a person's self esteem can be deeply impacted by compliments as well. The impact of a compliment can be long lasting and food for a person's soul. Always remember to be kind to people and if the compliment is not accepted, don't keep probing that person. If you keep deep diving into compliments toward a person, that can land you in hot water if they are unwanted. Just be careful, when passing out compliments, since some chicks can pretend to be okay with a compliment but then run to HR behind the scenes. Without giving away the store, go ahead and check out the question and my response down below: POSED QUESTION: "What does it mean if someone compliments you?" -By The Tarotok MY RESPONSE: "Hhmm… there are a variety of reasons for a guy giving you a compliment. You may genuinely deserve the compliment since you worked really hard. The guy may think highly of you so offering a compliment seems reasonable. In other scenarios, he may be sexually attracted to you so he is throwing compliments your way in an effort to gauge your response. If you offer a favorable response, he may send more compliments your way. I don’t think a compliment is a bad thing. The only time it is bad is if it’s unwanted sexual advances. If that is the case, you just make it up that you have a very jealous boyfriend. I’m missing as to exactly what was said from the compliment in order to analyze even further. Hopefully, you just soak in the compliment, thank him, and keep it moving. Don’t go deeper into the meaning other than what was actually said. For all you know, the person may just be choosing to be kind. I wish you luck! #ConstructionTales #VerballyDisastrous" -By Leslie M. This is short story #11 entitled, "Juggling Motherhood & Working With The Tools". This short story covers my life as a widowed, single mother in the era when I juggled both motherhood and my career as a journeywoman electrician. I share the various challenges I faced and lessons learned along the way. The previous short story is entitled: #10: "Early Life Lessons & Characters To Meet As An Apprentice". I decided to write about some life lessons such as guarding your personal information, managing nasty rumors, combating sexual harassment, gender discrimination, and racism. Overall, the construction culture has improved dramatically over the past 25-years. Developing both a thick skin and a sharp tongue are key tools needed to survive various jobsite antics. I hope you learn something from this short story. There are more to come. These short stories are now also available as Verbally Disastrous podcast episodes. Vol. #43: Showcasing (3) More Awesome Gang Authors!!

I intend on having the audio version of the book as well. Have you ever worked on getting a children's book online? Are you a budding author who just launched your book/podcast!? It's important to have all of the social media platforms and build your brand via networking with others. I find great power in the hashtag as well. My hashtags are #LeslieMJasper, #ConstructionTales, and #VerballyDisastrous. Share with me your hashtag and connect with me on social media. If you could also network with my 16-year-old son John's "Call To Action Marketing" business (hashtag #CTAMarketing), that would be helpful and highly appreciated. This post is intended to share even more work of some independent authors, such as myself, and earn some good karma in the process. Why not offer you a taste of a variety of authors with different content? Let me know if you have discovered a new author during this "Showcased Author Series"? My objective is to pick out different authors that offer a variety of media content. For the record, I know nothing about the author other than what is showcased in the author article that was shared, via Awesome Gang. Feel free to copy and paste and share this content on your blog, if you like. As an author, if you want to add more information, drop it down in the comment section below and I will edit and add at my earliest convenience. For now, I'm connecting with the authors in an effort to build my author network. Hopefully, they will follow me back on social media. I'm game to cross promote each other on social media as well. Just let me know or re-tweet one of my posts and I will automatically return the favor on Twitter. I'm totally cool with many ways to help each other market each other. When you are a small content creator, it is important to help others out. I recently shared some free marketing websites in a blog post. I've even submitted #ConstructionTales to both Awesome Gang and Book Reader Magazine recently. I recently submitted my children's book to Awesome Gang and Book Goodies while currently working on other avenues. My first children's book #NotAllGirlsPlayWithDolls is intended to empower young kids to pursue their passions even if it is not normally the tradition in their society. Here are (3) showcased authors down below: Showcased Author- 1.) J.P. Charles Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written. I am an afficianado of all things literary, automotive and have always been passionate about writing. For many years, it has been a lifelong dream to be a published author and tell a good story. I like to write short stories, poetry and have completed one full length novel which is a part of a series. When not writing, I enjoy working on cars and listening to all genres of music. What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it? The romantic thriller that I completed is entitled The Rabbit and The Dragonfly and it has been inspired by a lot of elements of my personal life and experiences. What authors, or books have influenced you? The works of Niholas Sparks, Ian Fleming and Stieg Larsson have been my main influences. What are you working on now? The sequel to my debut novel. What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books? To use all available resources such as social media and book clubs. Do you have any advice for new authors? Just keep your dreams alive and never settle for second best. What are you reading now? Dear John by Nicholas Sparks. What’s next for you as a writer? To move to California and get married. If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring? The first four books by Terry Goodkind. Author Websites and Profiles J.P. Charles Website: https://keoughcharles77.wixsite.com/jpcharles J.P. Charles Amazon Profile: https://www.amazon.com/J.P.-Charles/e/B09VXXZYN6 Showcased Author- 2.) Isla Ryder Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written. Isla Ryder grew up around horses but never owned one of her own, instead settling for riding lessons and every horse book she could find. When those books stopped being enough, she began writing her own. Throughout school, she loved creative writing classes and earned a BDIC degree from UMass Amherst. She has published a series of sweet cowboy romance novellas and loves working with other authors as an alpha reader and developmental editor. What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it? Boundary Lines is the final book in my Harris Twins Series. It follows two brothers and their family ranch. I have always loved horses and have been riding as long as I can remember. I’ve been at many farms over the years, in all different riding disciplines and situations—show barns, auction barns, family farms—and I wanted to write something that I could use all those little experiences to make feel authentic. When I started book one of the series, I wasn’t sure it would be a series at all, but as I began, I knew there was much deeper to go and I couldn’t stand to leave the ranch just yet. Soon after, books two and three followed to round out the series. Do you have any unusual writing habits? I tend to write fast. I don’t do a lot of plotting or planning. I sit down and just type with a vague outline in mind. Characters always come to me through dialog and the way they speak for before I have a physical idea of them and I don’t worry much about searching my mind for those types of descriptions until I start revising. If I pause too long to worry about it, my flow is broken. Understanding what a first draft is for (getting the story down) has really helped my writing. What authors, or books have influenced you? I like to read many genres. I don’t have many favorites, but I admire prolific writers—the ones that can’t seem to stop producing creative work. I connect with that need to create and hope someday to be among them. What are you working on now? Right now I am putting the finishing touches on a short story prequel to my Harris Twins Series that features the twins’ parents meet-cute and first date. It can be a total stand-alone but gives some fun tidbits for the main series, such as how the ranch gets its name. When I hit publish on Boundary Lines (book 3) I was bereft—I wasn’t ready to leave the ranch, so that same day I started this story and I can’t wait to share it with readers. What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books? I am still learning about marketing, and love exploring really niche groups within my genre of sweet cowboy romance. I also love stepping outside of ‘reader specific’ areas and jumping into horse groups and pages. Horse people can be leery of horse fiction, and with good reason, as many writers don’t do enough research and have never lived the life. I enjoy offering something authentic to them and seeing them come around and get back into horse fiction without being worried about being pulled from the story by inaccuracies. Do you have any advice for new authors? Just start writing! I know that seems obvious but you can edit a draft but you can’t turn a blank page into a bestseller. Find someone who believes in you and your story and work with them or trade critiques. Be open to suggestions but know that you aren’t obligated to take 100% of someone’s advice. It is your story, after all! What is the best advice you have ever heard? The best advice I’ve heard echos the advice I like to give. I think I got the sentiment originally from a NaNoWriMo pep talk back in my senior year of high school when I did not know what I was doing, only that I wanted to write. And I did. I ‘won’ Nano that year with my 50k novel. Was it good? No, but it was finished—I had done it and that was enough to show me I could do it. The next time would be better, and the time after that it would be even more so. Even now, if I look back at my writing from only a few years ago, I can see how I’ve improved. You just have to keep writing and keep revising and you will make progress. What are you reading now? I am currently reading Like Water Catching Fire by E.M. Lindsey. While it is not a typical pick for me, I won it in a contest and am pleasantly surprised by it. It portrays a deaf character in a very realistic and sensible way that doesn’t feel likes it’s just for show or hashtags. It is also surprisingly sweet. I may look into more books from them. What’s next for you as a writer? Right now, I am working with a group of writer friends to create a sweet romance anthology. Collecting, critiquing and polishing up stories from many authors—both new and established is so fun and rewarding and has prompted me to make sure that my submissions are as good as they can be too. Next up will probably be a stand-alone equestrian romance based in the show-jumping world. If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring? There are very few books that I ever re-read but I can list them off in a heart-beat: The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster, Einsteins Dreams by Alan Lightman, and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. My fourth would likely be House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski. It’s a gorgeous book, but it has been on my nightstand waiting to be read for far too long. These next three project I am very excited about. What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books? Amazon or Barnes and Nobles. I love also promoting on my Instagram.
