Advice: The Meaning Behind The Phrase "You Do You!"
Hello Everyone!
How is your Tuesday working out for you my friend!? What's crackin' on your side of the globe today? I'm delivering another dose of Quora advice straight with no chaser. This piece of my mind is on the subject of one party yelling "you do you!" to another party. There appears to be no way to soften and clean up this injection of nastiness. I'm sure there is quite a bit of missing context that was withheld prior to this phrase being uttered while in an angered state of mind. Does the person actually mean it or not?? Why do we even have to ask that question? Is there another side of the coin to consider on this phrase? One would like to think that the speaker is strongly encouraging the other person to go ahead and make the right choice for themselves. Perhaps they are being indecisive and they need an assertive push to do for themselves?? I'm not confident as to that being the meaning behind the phrase. I interpret that phrase to be manipulative by nature. The person is saying one thing yet that is not actually what they truly mean. Perhaps the phrase is issued as a challenge to dare them to do what they want to do and see what happens afterwards? Now, when they choose to actually "do you", they could face a verbal or even a physical assault. Why tell someone to "do you" when you don't even mean it to begin with? I tend to believe that once you start dropping empty threats, you lose respect in the eyes of many. Ideally, your word should be your currency and your bond. In a perfect world, what you say should be taken seriously since idle threats and double talk are not normally in your vocabulary. I find people who either make empty threats or misleading/veiled comments to be annoying as hell! If you tell someone to "do you", then that's what it should mean. It shouldn't be some bullshit where you tell someone you are okay with their behavior meanwhile you are REALLY not. What's wrong with saying exactly what you mean and meaning exactly what is said? Every person should be free to make choices as they see fit. Who are you to force a person to make a choice to make you happy? Even if a person is being selfish, just let them be selfish. Their continued pattern of behavior should motivate you to remove yourself from the situation if it bothers you that badly. People should only play games with toys and not people. Believe it or not, it's 2022 and people still can't read minds. Well, what is your take on the use of this phrase? If you have a totally different thought process on the interpretation, by all means share it. You can easily share your perspective by dropping it down in the comment section below. Now, without further delay, go ahead and check out the question and my response down below:
POSED QUESTION:
"When somebody yells "you do you!", do you find it annoying?" -By Chris Schmehl
MY RESPONSE:
"Well, when the phrase is spoken in that manner, it can be interpreted that it was said in anger. This phrase exudes an angry tone even if read as a text and not spoken. The emotional under layers are frustration, disappointment, and even challenging the action in question. The person has either totally given up and no longer cares or is beyond frustrated at that moment. The frustrated side is using the phrase as a temperature 🌡 check to guage the response of the other party. If the other party follows through with “do you”, it can cause the speaker to have a verbal meltdown and/or walk away to permanently leave the situation. As the person who is actually faced with “doing you”, you can choose to consider the other party's feelings and position or go with your intended plan of action. You just have to consider the consequences for your own actions, the response from the other person, and own your choice. I think a time when this phrase is annoying is when the speaker doesn't actually mean what they are saying. I find empty threats to be highly annoying. The only thing we have to stand behind is our word as our bond. I expect people to go to the bank metaphorically with my words. That is one thing my father taught me. My sons knew as kids that my words hold a currency. Kids will walk all over a person with empty words. Do you expect an adult to move differently? It's hard to respect a person who is all bark and no bite. If you are saying it in an effort to manipulate the other person's emotions, it's also really annoying. Ideally, you should only say it if you genuinely don't care what action the person takes. You can't control what others do; only your own response. Even if you don’t agree with the choice to “do you”, you need to let it go and let them make the choice. I understand if that's a deal breaker choice for you. If so, then go ahead and “do you”. Just don't say anything that you don't intend to fully execute and don't hold anyone emotionally hostage. The other party can pick up on empty words and will move accordingly. All parties should be invested at free will and be happy with their own choices. I wish you luck and much success with your life choices! #ConstructionTales #VerballyDisastrous" -By Leslie M. Jasper

I totally appreciate your choice to divert your attention onto my advice post today. What comes to mind when you think about the "you do you!" phrase? The exclamation point makes it an angry delivery. Perhaps reading it in text form makes the interpretation even more harsh versus hearing it spoken? What do you think about that? Let me know, in the comment section below, if you either like or dislike my advice? Make sure to explain exactly as to your position so that I may gain an understanding. I'm interested in hearing the perspectives of others on this topic or any other one. I recently shared my latest short story that has been loaded up to my Construction Tales-Told By A Woman Kindle Vella Library on Amazon. This is short story #11 entitled, "Juggling Motherhood & Working With The Tools". This short story covers my life as a widowed, single mother in the era when I juggled both motherhood and my career as a journeywoman electrician. I share the various challenges I faced and lessons learned along the way. The previous short story is entitled: #10: "Early Life Lessons & Characters To Meet As An Apprentice". I decided to write about some life lessons such as guarding your personal information, managing nasty rumors, combating sexual harassment, gender discrimination, and racism. Overall, the construction culture has improved dramatically over the past 25-years. Developing both a thick skin and a sharp tongue are key tools needed to survive various jobsite antics. I hope you learn something from this short story. There are more to come. These short stories are now also available as Verbally Disastrous podcast episodes.
