Book Review From A Fellow Female Working Within The Construction Industry
Hello everyone,
I want to share with you a book review I received today. Linda has been in the construction industry for many years. I met her at the Independent Book Expo back in October. She picked up my book and loves it. We have developed a bond and keep in touch quite regularly. I appreciate her feedback. I will meet up with her the next time she is in town. She is working on a project in Washington DC at the moment. Thanks for reading and have a great day!
Cheers!

Linda Wright's book review:
This book is awesome...Leslie did a very good job in compiling her journey. Its very funny, emotional and factual in her discription of working and succeeding in a male dominated industry. Having to gain their trust and most importantly respect. I admire Leslie's strengths and celebrate her journey to success. Now Leslie works as a Project Manager and Electrical Engineer with one of NY's or should I say one of the world's, largest construction/electrical contracting firms.
I can identify with Leslie's journey because I myself have been working as a professional in the design and construction industry for the last 35 years and my success have taken me across the nation and the world where I've worked on some of the most fascinating projects you can ever imagine for example projects; in Seattle with Boeing's New 777x Aircraft and Projects in the UAE - Dubai's on Palm Jeremiah Island.
This book "Construction Tales:" is a page turner and at times was very difficult to put down. It's a great read and I highly recommend you get your copy you wouldn't regret it.

Signed 2nd Construction Tales Book Purchased Today
Hello everyone,
I want to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving to everyone who celebrates. I stopped by a friend's house today to spend some time with him. My big brother, Donny, is in the book. He has been a mentor and a big brother to me for many years. I got to see his fiance's, Liz, engagement ring and the new home projects. His brother has vowed to buy the book and read it for me and offer a review. I got to sign his book. It was the second book purchased when I released it August of 2013. It took about over 2 years for him to find it and me to remember to sign it. My sister, Kim, was the first person to buy the book. I was very grateful to people who have supported my book. As of today, I have no reviews of the teen version of my book. I have passed out many free copies but no one has followed through on their promise of a review. I find it frustrating since I don't have enough time to hound people. At some point, someone will give it a first review.
My nephew, Trey, is supposed to read the book and offer his review. My nephew's grandmother is reading the book. He is waiting for it to be returned so he can do the review as promised. When I get feedback I will share the review. My son finished the audiobooks edit and it should be loaded to Amazon soon. I will share when it is ready. The teen version must go on iTunes as well. It is on my to-do list. Have a great day and speak to you all soon!!
Cheers!

I Support The Whitehouse Council on Women and Girls Campaign
Hello everyone!
I am pleased to see the Whitehhouse is taking initiatives to empower women, girls, and minorities. I am tickled at the hashtag for the campaign that is #YesSheCan. I fully believe that if you are strong and smart and have a burningn desire to learn, there is NOTHING you can't do!!! My dad used to say that to me all the time! He used to tell me that I had an ability with my hands and was capable of doing anything my heart desired. He knew that way before I saw my own potential. Mentoring young people is vital to help society in the future. Someone has to take over the wheel some day when I retire.
It is about time to see evidence of change! It is great to see the American culture has somewhat evolved in the position taken regarding women and minorities. I know all too well that change doesn't happen overnight. I see more messages of encouraging girls to chase their dreams than ever before. It will still take many more years before women and minorities can get a good shake at equality. I find it funny that women were called to work in male-dominated jobs duriing World War II. Once the men returned home, women had to retreat back to the kitchen. I know the push back has alot to do with white men not losing their economic foot hold in the work field. God forbid they have to step up their game and compete with hard working women and minorities. I am happy affirmative action gave me a means to get my foot in the door in my trade. If it wasn't for that, I would not have great income and a pension on the horizon. By the way, I am a proud union journeywoman electrician out of Local #3 IBEW in New York City. I get the same pay as the man standing next to me. I thank the union for making that possible!! It makes sense why unions are degraded in society. Meanwhile, they offer a path for equal pay and work opportunities! I do not mention my union affiliation or the names of coworkers or contractors in my book for potential legal issues. It is not skipped out of lack of pride I assure you. I enjoy teaching a course to electrician apprentices called, Principles of Trade Unionism. It is great to mentor and inform the next generation of electricians. Knowledge is indeed power. I encourage women and minorities to join a union if you want equal pay and a fair shot at learning a trade.
It is a huge challenge to get people to stop discounting a person's ability simply based on skin color or gender. It is frustrating to show up on the job to work and coworkers (women do it too) discount ability based on an initial appearance. I know I used to run around and carry double of what my male coworkers would do. This was in an effort to display what I was capable of and earn respect. I ended up ruining my body in this process. I knew I was making progress when my coworkers stopped seeing me as a female and just one of the guys. I knew all too well that my personal life could tamper my reputation. I was careful to maintain a professional relationship with my peers and avoid putting too much of my personal life on display at work. No matter how private you try to be, people will still make assumptionss as to what you do on your own time. Some of these assumptions can be negative in nature and some can be made to find humor. My hope is that my efforts helped the next female who steps on the job hungry for a paycheck and earned respect as an equal. At the end of the day, a great means to take care of your family and not rely on anyone else.
I never wanted to rely on a man for my welfare. I did that once in my life and learned a powerful lesson. I married at 18 yrs old and he passed in an accident just before my 21st birthday. I was left stranded trying to pick up the pieces of my life. I knew from there on to make my own money and take care of myself. Anyone who comes into the situation is extra icing on the cake.
I have a censored version of my book. The book is entitled, Consruction Tales: A Young Person's Guide to Accomplish Anything in Life.
It is geared for younger readers in an effort to show them difficult things can be accomplished. No matter the push back, I was there to work and earn a paycheck. It is not easy to endure negativity on a regular basis. You must just dig deep and prove them wrong. Once you prove them wrong, you will gain a form of acceptance and life can become easier. I never concern myself with what people have to say. I usually make fun of it and keep chasing my goals. You can do it too! I am off to get some more things accomplished today!
Construction Tales (adult/teen) can be found for Kindle, Nook, iTunes, and paperback on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Apple.
As always, thanks for reading!
Cheers!

A Friend From Kathmandu, Nepal Is Going to Review Construction Tales
Hello everyone,
I have a friend who connected on Facebook with me. His name is Ganesh Mc and he is from Kathmandu, Nepal. His name means symbol of God. His nickname is Mesh. He has agreed to give me his opinion on my book. I am looking forward to hearing his thoughts on my book. As soon as he offers his review, I will blog about it. He is taking English classes and is highly motivated to develop a business plan. He works in the hotel and travel industry in Nepal. He says that I must be brave to be a woman in construction. It is true that I must be tough to survive in my business. I look forward to getting more international perspectives on my book. I am grateful for people all over the world finding my blog. I have to start writing Volume 2. I have to get into the habit of just writing 500 words a day to make it happen! I allow life to consume me and doesn't give me much free time. I am always looking for ways to promote my book. Thank you again for reading and please share my blog. If you reach out, I am happy to respond and blog about your thoughts as well.

My Time At Crown Plaza in Elizabeth, New Jersey For An Independent Author Book Expo Last Weekend!
Hello Everyone!
I am happy that I joined the group of 34 fellow independent authors at the 2nd annual Independent Author Book Expo in Elizabeth, New Jersey. I got to meet Renaee Smith. She is a fellow author and organizer of the event. As a way of paying it forward, I am going to list the names and contact info of those who joined me for the event. The event was busy, at different times, during the event. I must say I as happy to hear that not only these people were authors, they had other achievements under their belt. I usually am not intimidated by an audience. I must say that I got really nervous speaking to the group. I was going to read an exerpt from my book but forgot to do so. I was disappointed with that. I saw the facial expressions of the people as I walked up to speak. It seemed they were rather skeptical as to who I am and what I am about. It gave me a little anxiety. I knew I was attempting to tap into a new market. The majority of the audience was African American as well as from different islands in the Caribbean. While that was exciting to speak to a different group of readers, I was nervous of not being received correctly. I was afraid of saying something that I would perceive as funny and it could be taken the wrong way. My fiance is of African American and Native American descent. I was initially hoping he would come with me. I believe my initial fear was I would be viewed as an annoying outsider. Probably the same feelings I used to have on a jobsite as an apprentice. It was a fear that I had to push out of me. I develop a stubbornness to not allow anyone to intimidate me or push me away. After awhile, I pushed away the nervousness and said what needed to be said. Overall, I think I walked away with some future readers of my book. People know it exists and will tell others about it at the very least! I pushed my edited version of the book for younger readers. I talked about the need for young people to push for what they want to do and not give up. My story can align itself with minorities since I had to work hard to develop a good reputation amongst people who doubted my ability. This doubt was from nothing more than my gender. I know what it feels like to have people discount you just based upon an initial glance. I must say I will never know the plight of a minoriy. I have only an 8 hour a day sense of what it is like to be discounted for no other reason than my gender. It has definitely given me a different perspective on life and what people must go through 24/7 in their lives. My fiance, Curt, and I have many discussions on the topic. The best compliment I ever received was that I "work like a man". That and people have told me that they forgot I was a woman. It means I have blurred the lines in the sand in their mind. Perhaps the next woman that comes around will get a better chance at acceptannce and not total doubt. I look forward to talking to Renaee about developing an Independent Author union in the future shopping for publishers. I also look forward to next year's event! Happy Halloween 2015 Everyone!!
Hello everyone!
I celebrated Halloween last night coming to the door dressed as a granny. It seemed like not as many kids go trick or treating these days. I was hoping to see more costumes. I went with my fiance to the casino afterwards and pulled the handle a few times. I won some money to offset my donation to Mohegan Sun. I will talk about my trip to New Jersey last weekend in the next blog. I joined a group of 34 authors for an event to showcase our books collectively. Speak to you soon!

Hard Hatted Women Book Review- Next Book- The Joy of Plumbing
Hello everyone!
I finished reading the book entitled, Hard Hatted Women- Life on the Job. It was edited by Molly Martin. I would like to shout out to fellow electrician, Molly Martin. We are now connectetd on Facebook. She is an activist and a trailblazer and mentor for women in the trades. I appreciate the fellow women from all different walks of life who contributed to the enrichment of the book!! You got to hear short stories from women in the construction trades, truck drivers, police officers, fisherwomen (yeah, I made that one up), engineers, and women working on the farm. This book gives perspectives from all throughout the United States.
This book was published in 1988. Therefore, the women who collectively have written this book had shared stories for at least 40 years prior to the publishing date! It just goes to show you that there were some fearless women opening doors for young women today! They helped open the door for my presence and I appreciate it fully. I have almost 20 years in the union under my belt. I count my military experience, I am up to 23 years experience. I felt I had less pushback in the military than I did as a young apprentice in the civilian world. Then again, my military experience helped me as an apprentice first starting out in the union. Perhaps people felt that if I was strong enough to make it through military training, then I would get a pass to learn the business. I know my size and muscles did help me tremendously in the beginning. Men didn't want to challenge me since there was a high chance they would get their ass beat in a fight or hurt badly at the very least. It seemed like the women in this book all used different tactics in order to gain respect in the trade. Many strides have been made since women first started in non-traditional trades. Make no mistake about it, ALL WOMEN who step foot on a job are considered useless until proven otherwise. Women must make their reputation on the job one day at a time. Women must be smarter and know how to work before getting ANY KIND OF RESPECT. All it takes to ruin a reputation is sleeping with a guy on the job or being to open and free about your personal life. Ladies must keep their dating and personal life a secret!! That is the way it is and I doubt it will ever change! One piece of truth can be turned into a nasty rumor in no time. If you choose to become a friend with another female trade person, hopefully her work ethic matches your own. Men will lump your work ethic into her work ethic. I have heard countless times of guys talk about a female on the job who is only there to shop for a husband so she can have babies and eat bon-bons on the couch. I guess it makes sense to try to trash people you consider a threat to your livlihood.
One story that stuck out to me was a tin knocker woman who was doing work on a government building with a chair. She spoke about the heights and the dangers involved in that job. There were men afraid of working on that structure. She swallowed her fear and went out there every day and did her job. I was reading it while on the treadmill. I had a sense of pride for her that she mustered her strength and courage and didn't give up!! I felt, in the reading, that the carpenter women had the most to prove by far!! They have to hump sheetrock and wood and there is just no light duty tasks at all (in case you beat up your body or get pregnant). It is hard enough for a man to do the job. Men could have an off day or week or month. Women carpenters must be ready to battle ALL CONDITIONS at all times. Any moment of weakness, then your value goes to zero. Try to never get injured on the job since there are no light duty tasks one could do while healing up. There is no time ever to be sick or weak (my opinion).
I know in the beginning, I used to shy away from women. Once I got a pass from the men as hard worker, I felt a sense that I could breathe and rest easier. I used to have a fear that a new woman coming on the job could be weak and her bad work habits could rub off on me. I felt that all my hard work to earn a great reputation could go out the door in seconds. I now know that the men didn't want her there. Let's use our token female worker bee on the job to scare her away since she could be more powerful than our influence. It is done on subconscious level rather than a conscious level. Since I wanted to remain a 'part of the boy's club' I was willing to offer the silent treatment to the new girl. Meanwhile, I was being used by the boys to push their agenda than my own agenda. It took me awhile to learn to not feed into that nonsense. In my later years on the job, I learned to listen to my iPod not get sucked into rumors and gossip. That strategy ended up working for the best.
I would say the merchant sailor had the most mental stress to battle out of all of the stories. She contended with group of old school thinkers who felt she was there to merely clean up after them. This made it even more intense within close quarters. It seemed like it would take a long time before co-workers could ever see her as an equal. She may never live to see that kind of equality. I am starting to believe that women from foreign countries have more equality than American women. This is exactly why I want to read more foreign perspectives of women in non-traditional jobs. My next book to read was by a group of women plumbers from England. I can't wait to read and share that book!
I appreciate the fact that some of the women use humor to their approach in dealing with difficult situations. One example comes from a female carpenter foreman:
Well, uh, er, we have had other girls work here before. (PUFF, PUFF on the cigar) And, uh, er, they just haven't been able to handle the work.
(Translation) We don't really want you broads here, but were being forced to hire you. The other women couldn't take the abuse...will you?
One girl missed a lot of time, and another didn't want to do the heavy work.
(Translation) Your period is no excuse..and you're gonna get the shittiest, dirtiest jobs we've got. You're gonna have to work twice as hard as the men if you want to stick around.
Known as the "Everywomann" speech
I appreciated reading the humor that somme of these women had in their heads while being told some song and dance by a male co-worker.
In a nutshell, any woman that has the courage to step foot onto a jobsite where she is considered useless as a first impreession. Few men could handle that type of behavior towards them much less women. It is tough to manage daily scrutiny from all trades on the job. As a foreman, you never have to babysit a female on the job. Just ask the nearby laborer on the job. He will offer play by play action of what she did all day. It makes no sense to try to come in late or leave early since everyone on the job is watching. You might as well not cut corners either since tht will get noticed too. It's best to take your time and do the best work you can do. You must be known for doing the best work on the job. If you don't, you will get blamed for the worst work on the job (even if you didn't do it).
All these women in this book are made out of steel since you must be reslient at all times and check your emotions and hormones at the door. I was once told by an African-American co-worker that I now know what it feels like to be him for 7-8 hours a day. He said the good thing is that I get to take that suit off and put my snowflake suit on and go home. I can never say that I fully can share or know his experience but I definitely have empathy for his plight due to my experiences.
Overall, I enjoyed the book and the storiess are right on par with what I expected to read about. Despite the huge time span, I can say that not much has changed during that time frame. Men still do not want women on the job. A small group of men have resigned themselves to the fact that a few are going to attempt at it so they deal with it. There will always be the group who share the "barefoot and pregnant while chained to the stove" sentiment. You just yes those kinds of 'boys' to death. You watch them get into their car to go home and make their own wives miserable. Either that or their wives kick the shit out of them and their solution is to pick on the female co-worker. Usually razor-sharp wit and humorous charm sprinkled with hard work can win the toughest of personalities on the job over time. Afer all, just be thankful you don't have to go home with some of these guys; you just have to get through huge chunks of your life on the job daily. I forgot to mention, instead of being 1 courageous woman on the job, there are now 3 courageous women on the job. The way the men speak, at this rate all jobs will be run by and worked on by all women. Not going to happen in my lifetime. I know guys like a female presence since they can use her to get better accommodations on the job. I have rambled on enough about this book and my experiences. I am glad to read about the struggles these other women faced. It makes my own struggles seem not so bad. I am grateful to only have dealt with a few major issues over the span of my career.
So pick up a copy of Hard Hatted Women on Amazon. Enjoy the rest of your day now that you have read my long ass winded book review!!

Young Adult Version at Two Virginia Book Fairs
hello everyone!
I have been extremely busy the past few weeks making major changes in my life. I am getting ready to sell my house and move to Connecticut. I have not moved in almost 20 years so this is huge to me. I have things in my house I forgot existed. Just getting it ready to sell is feat within itself. Despite my moving, I still found time to submit the young adult version of the book to a few book fairs. The best part is that the fairs were free to enter. I just have to ship the books. I shipped Construction Tales: A Young Person's Guide to Accomplish Anything in Lfe. It is also on Amazon and Barnes & Noble. I am waiting for my son to finish editing the audio version of the book. One of the book fairs is for people within the psychology field. The other book fair is for the libraries in the state of Virginia. More ifo on the Virginia Library Association can be found at:
www.vla.org
I am attending another taping of Let's Talk About Writing on September 2, 2015. I have been invited along with some other alumni authors to talk about the book. I am excited to share my young adult version of my book. The taping is through Comcast and will be available on YouTube shortly after the session. I will be sharing when it becomes available.
I must remind people about the 2nd Annual Independent Author Expo on October 24, 2015 from 11am-4pm and FREE to the public!! It is being held at the Crown Plaza in Elizabeth, New Jersey. I will have both versions of the book on hand for purchase. www.iabx.org to see the author line-up.
I must go get some chores done! Have a great week! I plan to drop my car off for an oil change and dish about my latest read, Hard Hatted Women, in my blog I need to find my next read, The Joy of Plumbing. I have lost it and need to find it so I can read it.
Cheers!
