Advice: When Is It Appropriate To Say "Shut Up"??

For this blog post, I'm sharing with you a dose of my signature Leslie-style, custom crafted construction chick advice. This Quora question is about when is the appropriate time to use the phrase, "shut up"? I find the phrase "shut up" to be very rude. I may have rarely used it in my life. I more than likely have said it while emotionally charged or angry. I'm sure I have said it a handful of times to my sons over the years after losing my patience. I've damn sure said it to an annoying co-worker either in a very serious manner or joking. I'm sure I have also felt very bad shortly after my anger and/or frustration has worn off. The older I get, the more I have learned to avoid using the phrase. At the end of the day, you shouldn't let people hold your emotions hostage. That is a form of control that is not good to hand over to others. If I use it while joking, I try to be as dramatic with the delivery as possible. The whole facial expression and hand gestures add to the spice and sting of delivery. How often do you tell others to shut up? Any regrets after it leaves your lips? Have you managed to go through life never ever saying it out loud? Unless you're a toddler, I don't believe you. Grade school kids are probably the biggest offenders of uttering this mild form of obscenity. Let me know your pre-thoughts that form before using this rude phrase? How do you view the advice? At Thanksgiving dinner with the family, in a crowd of strangers in Times Square, on 5PM rush hour train, in a heated discussion with a co-worker, to your grandmother, at a funeral, etc. The choice is yours!! Now, the question is when is it more strategic? In the age of the internet, people can hide behind their computer and get away with being more bold with their position versus being in a face to face conversation. If you are actually being strategic about it, I give you much credit. Many people think without speaking- no bueno. Before saying something that you can’t take back, ask yourself what are the long term consequences of holding this position? Can the person hurt you financially? Physically? Emotionally? Once a phrase is uttered, it can change how a person views you in life. This simple phrase can make a person biased against you on unrelated future matters. Only you hold the key to that answer. I’m cautious about doing that in my professional life since I don’t want the long term harm. However, I’m surrounded by cowboys who give zero fux about the short term or the future. I always tell my sons do whatever you can live with and stick by if your feet were metaphorically held to the fire.
