Advice: How To Tell If A Person Is As Good As They Profess?

If you are outside the United States, do you even watch American football?? I'm kind of assuming that this is only an American pastime. I would be thoroughly entertained to hear from American football fans from outside the country. I've been a Philadelphia Eagles fan, along with my two sons, for the past 20-years. Over the years, my family sat together and watched many games together. I've not gotten myself into soccer that the rest of the world loves. I have sat with friends and watched a game or two over the years. I'm aware that I need to get on a plane and go to Europe and Asia to get that experience. The funny thing is that I get the European & Asian experience just by living here in New York City. LOL, I'm kidding! I know it's not the same. Anyways, let's talk about advice. Guess who found another question for your reading pleasure on Quora? Your New York homegirl has got you! :) I smirked when I stumbled upon this question. I laugh when I reflect and think about the guys who are self-proclaimed experts. A good person in their field doesn't have to brag or try to convince anyone. Their moves to completion speak for themselves. One has to ask if you have to be the absolute best in order to be qualified to even work in the industry? I don't think you have to go hard or go home. You just strive to do your best, collect your salary, and go home and enjoy down time with your family. Unless it's rocket science, tasks are not that difficult to mimic. Then again, my learning style, as an electrician, has been to watch others first, learn the basic steps, and then do it myself. Each task on the planet has a series of steps. You have the internet, including YouTube, to give you guidance on anything in life. You can easily watch how a person struggles during a task to see how effortless and efficient they can complete it. You don't need to be an expert in order to recognize that this person is struggling in his craft. I laugh when I see cocky people act like their craft is a "members only club". Meanwhile, anyone with two eyes, some intelligence, and basic knowledge of the steps required can figure out a person's ability. Without giving away the store, here is the posed question and my response down below: POSED QUESTION: "What is a sign that someone isn't as good as they say they are at something?" -By Sean Kernan MY RESPONSE: "This is an interesting question to tackle. Whenever you meet someone, they may offer a load of credentials. Every task on the planet consists of a sequence of steps from cradle to grave. The key is to get a general idea of the steps before observing the person working, if given the opportunity to observe. You need review the ease of a person’s words and actions to see if the credentials match in reality. No matter the goods or services a profession offers, there are key pieces of basic knowledge that a professional must possess in order to be authentic or good at their trade. Thank goodness for YouTube tutorials that offer step-by-steps that are required for almost any set of credentials out there. A person who is very good at their craft can seamlessly rattle off a series of step-by-step tasks that are required in order to complete a task, when asked. Unless it is custom or obscure, they should also be able to articulate solutions for most questions that you have posed on the work. In construction, I tend to watch a person work and study their sequence of steps and how they are executed. I can see if they are a sloppy or clean when they work and the struggles with each step. I will watch to see how long they linger in one particular area (each step), mistakes made such as the “bone pile” of bad conduit bends or broken material debris, the down time, how much work the person does versus their partner, how they articulate their work, the results of the final product, etc. I also study a person’s consistency with their work, level of precision, whether they are late to work, reputation amongst fellow co-workers, and even topics discussed during coffee or lunch break. Feedback from fellow tradespeople will give clues as well. A person who is decent at their craft will be respected by their peers. You can see if a person struggles at each step, duration of each step or whole task, or their level of focus while on the task. A proficient person makes task look very easy to perform. A person who has to tell you they are good at their craft are usually all talk and no action. I also strongly believe attention to small details and cleanliness along the way is a vital guide as well. I once was basically interviewing doctors to get my carpal tunnel surgery done. I ruled out a doctor after seeing dirt under her fingernails at the consultation. If you don’t have constant attention to detail, you are not cutting me open. A person who is not somewhat organized with their work space and/or looks confused or chaotic is a dead giveaway as well. Then again, not everyone is meticulous with their work. Instead, they do the bare minimum, via just slapping stuff together. If the final product looks beat up or not even level and plumb, I find that a key indicator as well. As a manager, I’d want to just issue a layoff and call on a competent person to get the work completed to satisfactory standards. There is nothing worse to me than lazy workers. The offense goes higher when these lazy folks promote themselves as a motivated and proficient professional. Perhaps there are more key indicators than what I listed.
