Advice On The Meaning Of Brake Checking During Road Rage

Now that I am back, I have shared some YouTube videos of the adventure and gave a little review of the kamp cabin experience in my previous posts. Now that I am back, I am reviewing questions on Quora in an effort to find an interesting topic. The question I chose to discuss on asks about the practice of "brake checking" the driver behind you. If you are a driver, you know all about the subject of road rage. As a driver of the streets of New York City, I find road rage as a huge challenge to harness. In the Big Apple, we are always on the go and under quite a bit of stress. I believe that road rage is not exclusively limited to just large metropolitan cities. Perhaps road rage is less of an issue in small towns. Angry and aggressive people are also angry and aggressive on the highway. I saw video clips of traffic in heavily populated cities in foreign countries such as India. According to the Hindustan Times, the most heavily congested roads are in large Indian cities such as: Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Delhi. These heavily congested cities came in at #2, #6, #8 and #16 on the most recent TomTom world traffic index. I would be extremely interested to hear from my readers from India about how they deal with traffic? As a driver in these cities, are you cool as a cucumber or enraged like a hot chili pepper? I would totally welcome any road rage stories from anyone and anywhere in the globe. I stumbled upon this road rage question that was posed on Quora. The question asks about the meaning of someone "brake checking" you. According to the Urban Dictionary, here is the definition of brake checking. While driving, you make the choice of hitting your brakes really hard to scare the crap out of the jerk driving two inches from your rear bumper. Be sure to check to make sure that the rear driver has enough time to brake without rear-ending you. The goal of the brake check is to just piss off the driver behind you. What it can do is make the rear driver extremely aggressive and escalate the road rage situation to where the two parties and nearby innocent bystanders are at risk for a multi-car pile up, injury, and even death. Behavior like this can possibly lead to, if convicted, prison under manslaughter charges. Yes, it is one of the most foolish behaviors you can do on the road. Despite brake checking, you don't really want to be crashed into from behind. The goal is to just check the rear driver, scare him, make him back off, or mildly enrage the rear driver. Here in the U.S., our insurance company assigns blame to us if we rear end another driver for any reason. After an accident, the at fault driver's insurance will increase to pay for the damages paid out by the insurance company. This is why it is important to look alive at all times while driving behind other drivers in their cars. This is also why it is very stupid to put all parties in danger no matter the reason. It is wise to leave your ego at home and try to get from point A to point B as safely as possible. If you have passengers, you owe it to them to get them to the destination as safely as possible. Lastly, don't take what other drivers do so personally. You have no idea their story or what they have on their plate in life. They are merely reacting based upon a perception of observed behavior. They may be mad that you had just cut them off previously or performed some form of aggressive driving. The front driver may be angry that the rear person is pushing the front driver to travel at a higher speed than they desire via creating a short gap between bumpers. The rear driver may be highly frustrated that the front driver is driving in the left lane who belongs in the right lane. In the United States, drivers travel in the opposite direction compared to England and other countries. When multiple lanes are established for each direction, the right lane is for travel and the left lane is for passing. Many travelers opt to drive ‘slow’ in the left lane instead of moving to the right lane and let other drivers pass. I admit that I have a lead foot and I can’t stand it when a ‘slow’ driver opts to stay in the left lane! I try to dial back any frustration with the aggressive behavior of others. You have to remember everyone is going through something in life. Anger brings on such foolishness and rash decisions. Road rage is a very serious issue on the highway. It is not good at all to be willing to create a serious rear end collision that ruins your vehicle, your body, and endangers the life of all passengers in both vehicles by slamming on the brakes. It is indeed selfish behavior in fit of anger to attempt to control the behavior of the driver behind you. The brake checker move is totally counting on the driver behind him to react quickly to their actions. When you think about it, why would you put your life in someone else’s hands by brake checking? In the big scheme of things, a driver giving an obscene finger to another driver is not worthy of creating a potentially deadly automobile accident. Aggressive driving is also not worth the risk of a deadly accident. However, when you are behind the wheel, the aggressive actions of another driver is very hard to ignore. One driver can be totally convinced that the other driver’s behavior is totally personal. In reality, the aggressive driver is running late and the other driver has no sense of urgency and standing in their way. The driver may even perceive that the slow driver is doing it on purpose. I know I have been guilty of driving fast and having little patience for slow drivers throughout my driving career. As I have gotten older, I have tried to slow down and not take road rage so damn personal. We must remember that the other driver doesn't even know us. We are only a momentary blip on the radar of the life journey of the other driver. We can't change the past, we can only do better moving forward. This wraps up my thoughts on the topic of road rage.
