A Memorial For Our Beloved Four Legged Friend
Hello Everyone!
I am writing about the passing of one of my 4-legged friends. Dutch and Daisy spent many moments together. Her name is Dutch and she was turning 14-years old next month. My closest friend in the world Melissa lost her best friend today. It was super sad to watch my friend make the decision to have her put down peacefully. Dutch had the usual aging issues with bad hips and having a hard time finding a comfortable place to rest. Dutch started having seizures last week. She was taken to the vet to help her stop the seizures. The medicine didn't stop the seizures but made them less intense. Dutch was having a few seizures per day. As the weekend progresses, the seizures became more frequent and intense. She was delirious and slamming into walls and very much incoherent. By today, she was walking in a circle repeatedly, consistently foaming at the mouth, and having constant seizures while walking in a circle. This Dutch was far from the lively dog that family and friends know and love. The question was do we go on a journey and subject her to a bunch of tests and trials with medications? We brought her to the vet today and the on call vet suggested trying Dutch on a new medication that could take about 7 weeks to see if it even helps. Will that help her quality of life in the meantime? Given her age, it only prolonged the process and will not restore her to the pre-seizure dog we all know and love.
When you see old videos of her, she was so lively and enjoying life. She always was happy to see me when I come over. My dog Daisy, who is also a senior, would run and hide under the bed while Dutch was in the middle of the seizures. Daisy would sense them prior to them happening to Dutch and go hide. Dutch was rather needy and would bark while looking for Melissa. In the past few days, she stopped doing that. It got to the point where she didn't know where she was going or who you were. She was literally walking nonstop in circles for over two hours. Her legs were shaking the entire time holding herself up. I tried to pick up the circle of drool within the circle. I have never seen a dog do that in my entire life. I felt emotional seeing her ailing health and knowing my dear friend is going to be an emotional wreck. The decision to put down a beloved dog, who has been a beloved family member for many years, is not an easy one. I remember her when she was young, middle aged, and a senior dog. The dog I saw today was so mentally out of it. I made sure to drive my friend to the vet so that she could hold her for the last time. My dog Daisy is a senior herself. I know this is something that I have to face in the near future. The vet hospital made a beautiful paw print for her with her name to take home. She was able to walk with that memento before we left the vet hospital.
The vet is taking Dutch for cremation so that Melissa can hold onto her. They give the option to let you take the dog home to bury her. She didn't want to bury the dog in the yard and move some day. We all have to make this choice the day you bring a dog or cat into your home. It was hard to come back to a house that was missing Dutch. It is a hole in the heart that will take time to heal. Melissa is thinking about getting a tattoo of Dutch's paw in the keepsake. It is a nice memory to have for a lifetime. Dogs are so special to us. They are a member of the family. They love us absolutely unconditionally and offer loads of love. The most loyal love you can ever get is from a dog. If this reminds you of a beloved animal, I am sorry for your loss. The best gift you can give to an animal is to end their pain and suffering. You have to be willing to push past your own feelings of loss. Watching an animal suffer is such a terrible thing to do. Dutch will be greatly missed. Despite the huge loss, I am sure she would have not traded her for anything in the world. Dutch got to travel across the country a few times. Besides New York, Dutch lived in California for a few years then Florida. Every where Melissa went, Dutch was sure to follow and want to be right there. She will always be in her heart and mind. I wanted to write this as a memorial of our beloved 4-legged furry friend. I thank you for stopping by and reading my content. You have many options on your side of the globe. I am grateful for it always. I wish you a peaceful Monday and a good rest of week.
Cheers!
Leslie M. Jasper
