Advice: Wearing A Mask & Understanding The Function Of What Is Said
Hello Everyone!
We made it to the end of another work week my friend and in the middle of enjoying another weekend!! The best part is that I'm in the midst of a 3-day 4th Of July holiday weekend! This past week has been extremely warm and humid here in New York City. How is life going for you on your side of the globe? May you have a great weekend with your beloved friends and/or family. I thank you for stopping by so I can reveal even more Quora topics with you. But first, allow me to share my first children's book that's entitled, "Not All Girls Play With Dolls" that is available in e-book, paperback, and hardcover on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and iTunes. Additionally, I'm also sharing my first adult book entitled, "Construction Tales: Volume I: A Woman's Journey To Become An Electrician". Now, it's time to reveal another two-dose advice blog post, courtesy of Quora, for your reading pleasure. This first piece of advice is on the meaning behind the phrase, "I didn't ask for your mask". I believe that people wear masks both intentionally and un-intentionally. It totally makes sense to not share your quirky behavior in front of your boss and co-workers. The office is no place to let your hair down and behave as you would on your days off. It's when person's behavior totally deviates from their normal way of being is where I have an issue with it. Not being your authentic self or behaving fake is grounds for the eye roll or side eye of scrutiny. I realize that being fake is a common practice in society. There are many who embrace that lifestyle. Of course you can do what you want. I also don't have to like, tolerate, trust, or respect your web of lies. What are your thoughts on fake personas? How do you deal with them? I study them from afar and move accordingly. The second round of advice is on the meaning behind the phrase, “understanding the function of what is said”. I went straight snarky with the example for the second question and response. By all means, share your thoughts on these two advice posts. Let's head right into these two Quora discussions by reading both the questions and my responses that follow it down below:
POSED QUESTION #1:
"What does it mean when someone says "I didn't ask for your mask"?" -By Leonie Auret
MY RESPONSE #1:
"My interpretation of that phrase means that the person speaking is under an impression that the other party is not being their authentic self. The person is essentially calling out the mask wearer on the carpet and exposing their inconsistent behavior. I know many people who believe that the average person wears a mask according to what task they are working on and who they are interacting with at the moment. When amongst co-workers, a person will wear a mask that is professional, courteous, and strictly business. When amongst a person’s parents, they are polite, respectful, and family oriented. During a night out on the town with the boys, the mask used may most represent the person’s authentic self. It’s not necessarily a bad thing when a person wears different masks while in different environments. Mask wearing happens since each environment can be very different with varying behavioral requirements. The parents may very well not want to see the authentic, wild side of their child. Out of respect for the parents, the wild and crazy side has a lid temporarily on it while in their presence. Additionally, it isn’t wise to completely let your hair down while in front of your boss and co-workers. Twerking on the boss during the company Christmas party is not well advised. The part where wearing a mask is disgusting is when you are in the presence of someone you genuinely can’t stand yet pretend that they are your best friend. It’s understandable if a person has to keep the peace with a co-worker for the sake of keeping their job. Just don’t put on a façade that leads your enemy to think you are their best friend. Then again, you are free to move as you wish. Others witnessing those fake moves in the office are looking at you with the side eye. This is exactly why I fully respect the straight shooter person who is missing a filter and is absolutely rough around the edges with their delivery. They are honest regardless of the environment and give zero fux about how the average person will receive the data that flows like wine off of their lips. It is also believed that a couple who are in a brand-new relationship are each wearing a mask. This mask is put on in an effort to look the most appealing to each other. Over time, you see the cracks in the mask as the real personality accidentally slips through the cracks at various moments. There is a point where the couple can each decide if they can tolerate what they have seen slip through. I don’t think everyone intentionally puts on the new relationship mask. It is just human nature to a best representative of yourself. It’s a matter of time as to how far a person’s mask truly deviates from reality. It is bad is when the person is totally acting way out of character of their authentic self to where they become unrecognizable for people who have known them for years without the mask. At the end of the day, we have to be willing to own anything that gets exposed. I believe that it’s important to be able to own each and every thing you do. I’m a fan of knowing when and where to behave since that is smart and strategic. Just don’t veer off too far from your true self. You don’t have to apologize if the mask is indeed the authentic you. We are all human and susceptible to making mistakes. May you not be negatively impacted by the mask that another person is wearing. #ConstructionTales #VerballyDisastrous #NotAllGirlsPlayWithDolls" -By Leslie M. Jasper

POSED QUESTION #2:
"What does “understanding the function of what is said” mean? What is an example?" -By Ibrahim
MY RESPONSE #2:
"My interpretation of the phrase would immediately first reference the “function” word in the phrase. The word function in this phrase means what is the purpose of understanding what was said. In layman’s terms, what is the reason as to why a person communicates a message? Does the person have a motive behind their communication? Figuring out the motive helps to understand the objective behind what was spoken. Rarely does a person speak without a purpose. The purpose can come from a wide variety of reasons. Hopefully, you are not being taken advantage of ever. May you have good luck on your life path. #ConstructionTales #VerballyDisastrous #NotAllGirlsPlayWithDolls *EDIT*- I initially opted to break down the meaning without an example. At the time, I didn’t have an example. Here is my attempt at an example: “Maybe some day you will get a great husband like mine”. What’s the point of saying that to another person? It’s a passive aggressive sentence intended to point out what a person is lacking while the other has an abundance. The function of the phrase can be intended to make the other person lacking a husband jealous." -By Leslie M. Jasper

I recently shared my latest short story that has been loaded up to my Construction Tales-Told By A Woman Kindle Vella Library on Amazon. This is short story #11 entitled, "Juggling Motherhood & Working With The Tools". This short story covers my life as a widowed, single mother in the era when I juggled both motherhood and my career as a journeywoman electrician. I share the various challenges I faced and lessons learned along the way. The previous short story is entitled: #10: "Early Life Lessons & Characters To Meet As An Apprentice". I decided to write about some life lessons such as guarding your personal information, managing nasty rumors, combating sexual harassment, gender discrimination, and racism. Overall, the construction culture has improved dramatically over the past 25-years. Developing both a thick skin and a sharp tongue are key tools needed to survive various jobsite antics. I hope you learn something from this short story. There are more to come. These short stories are now also available as Verbally Disastrous podcast episodes.
