Hello Everyone!
Welcome back to another Monday that launches yet another work week here in New York City. Thankfully, the weather has cooled down significantly and they are serving pumpkin lattes in coffee shops everywhere here. October is my favorite month of the entire year. I absolutely love running through haunted houses and graveyards, with my sons Tom and Johnny, in order to find the scariest Halloween venue out there. I sincerely wish you nothing but the best luck and much success along your personal path. For today's blog post, I'm discussing another safety topic on the dangers of asbestos. Before I proceed even further with the asbestos topic, I might as well share with you my latest Amazon promotions for my e-books. My first adult e-book entitled, "Construction Tales: Volume I: A Woman's Journey To Become An Electrician" is now scheduled to be in the Kindle Countdown Deal, within the United States market, from September 8th-15th. My first children's e-book entitled, "Not All Girls Play With Dolls" and my edited teen version entitled, "Construction Tales: A Young Person's Guide To Accomplish Anything In Life" just wrapped up their Kindle Countdown promotions. I shall share when they are enrolled in new discount promotions. As a reminder, the promotions only applies to the e-book versions. I'm truly honored to be sharing my new release of the "I'm My Own Sugar Daddy" online e-store through Spring. I'm working on making it also available on Shopify, Printful, and other e-commerce platforms. I have two designs to choose from: 1) Feisty Lady Trio 2) Sugar Momma Bed. Check out my two design concepts for the product line along with the Spring store links down below this safety blog post. As I have also shared a few times before, we are in the process of launching my new website, "Safety First Training Academy" that can be found at http://www.safetyfirstllc.net/. As of now, the website is still under construction and we are in the preparation process. I'm going to add some construction safety related topics to this blog for your reading pleasure. The purpose of adding them here is that they will also be available on the Safety First Training Academy website. I vow to go return to cherry picking some Quora topics in the future. I'm very much looking forward to the future success with our various business ventures!!

For this blog post, I'm going to discuss the hazards associated with handling asbestos. I know, as an apprentice back in the 1990's, I walked all over pipes that were covered with asbestos. I was even involved in popping up some tiles that contained asbestos at work. Handling asbestos was something that was mentioned in passing at the coffee break table while at work. However, it didn't seem to be as much of a recognized hazard compared to how it is today. You might ask me what is asbestos? What is the big deal about it? Asbestos is a heat-resistant, fibrous silicate mineral that can be woven into fabrics or integrated in other materials. Until the 1800s, people mainly used asbestos to make fireproof cloth in small amounts. By the time of of the surge of the Industrial Revolution, asbestos became widely used for steam engines and as insulating materials for pipes. The explosion of the Industrial Revolution caused a development of technology that aided in easily mining the mineral along with infusion of asbestos into materials. An even deeper demand for asbestos came as a result of the World War ship building industry as well as the post war building boom that followed. This highly sought after asbestos mineral can be mined from all over the world. It was once mined from various parts of North America. Today, it's main exporters are: Russia, Kazakhstan, and China. There are (6) different types of asbestos. Most of them have a straight, jagged shape with the last type that has curly characteristics. Here are the names of the (6) different types of asbestos minerals:
Crocidolite
Amosite
Anthophyllite
Tremolite
Actinolite
Chrysotile
As stated previously, the U.S. military used asbestos extensively, from the 1930's to the 1970's, on Navy ships. This extensive use of asbestos gave Navy veterans a higher chance of exposure to asbestos related diseases. To make matters even worse, veteran family members were also subjected to asbestos related diseases, via second hand exposure. Exposure to asbestos builds up in the body over time due to continuous exposure. Asbestos is responsible for workers developing, after a 10-40 year span of time, diseases such as: mesothelioma, lung cancer, and asbestosis. The asbestos fibers hook into the lungs and develop some scar tissue. By the 1970's, the first asbestos lawsuits were launched in an attempt to make asbestos manufacturers liable for the harm inflicted on workers who are subjected to exposure. There was an attempt to ban asbestos back in 1989. However, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit overturned the ban in 1991 under pressure from industry lobbyists. There are still some regulations on asbestos that were not overturned. Today, there are approximately 1.3 million construction workers who are at risk of exposure while on the jobsite. Why is this mineral worth the health risk anyways? Asbestos was used for it's amazing ability to strengthen and fireproof materials as well as resisting corrosion. Asbestos is the main ingredient that is used in a variety of products that include the following:
concrete
bricks
fireplace cement
pipes
Adhesives
Automotive parts
Cement
Construction mastics
gunning mix
Diaphragms
Duct connectors
Electrical components
Felt
Fireproofing
Gaskets
Insulation
Laboratory equipment
Plastics
Cement sheets
Textiles
Tiles
Vinyl products
Asbestos is a valuable mineral that has been added to many products. The lobbyists are clearly strong and powerful within that industry. However, I believe that no one beats the pharmaceutical industry lobbyists. Awareness on the dangers of asbestos started happening between the 1950's and 1970's. Although the use of asbestos has been largely phased out since the 1980's, it can still be found in products such as gaskets and brake pads. Workers knowingly exposed to asbestos are recommended to document their exposure as much as possible. Diseases from asbestos lie dormant in the body for a long period of time before resurrecting as a devastating disease. By this point, you may want to know exactly how does the asbestos fibers attack the body? The asbestos fibers attack the lungs. Some of the airborne fibers can become lodged within your alveoli. The alveoli are tiny sacs inside your lungs where oxygen is exchanged for carbon dioxide in your blood. The asbestos fibers irritate and scar lung tissue, causing the lungs to become stiff. This makes breathing rather difficult. As asbestosis progresses, more and more lung tissue becomes scarred. Eventually, your lung tissue becomes so stiff to where the lungs can't contract and expand normally. You might also ask what are the symptoms of asbestos related diseases? Here are the symptoms of various diseases that come after asbestos exposure:
Shortness of breath
A persistent, dry cough
Chest tightness or pain
Dry and crackling sounds in your lungs when you inhale
Fingertips and toes that appear wider and rounder than usual (clubbing)
On my jobsite, we have asbestos handlers and monitors working. They are required to post warning signs The asbestos handlers have created their decontamination shed and prepped some areas for future asbestos removal. My main job is to keep the tenants safe and make sure the contaminated material gets removed from the jobsite. When that crew gets really rockin and rollin onsite, I'm sure I shall discuss those adventures for your reading pleasure. In the meantime, I certainly hope you learned something from this blog post topic. If you have any questions on this topic, drop the comment down in the bottom of this blog post. I will answer your question when I get a chance to do so. I'm also open to other safety topic suggestions as well. I thank you for stopping by this safety themed blog post today. I recently shared my latest short story that has been loaded up to my Construction Tales-Told By A Woman Kindle Vella Library on Amazon. This is short story #11 entitled, "Juggling Motherhood & Working With The Tools". This short story covers my life as a widowed, single mother in the era when I juggled both motherhood and my career as a journeywoman electrician. I share the various challenges I faced and lessons learned along the way. The previous short story is entitled: #10: "Early Life Lessons & Characters To Meet As An Apprentice". I decided to write about some life lessons such as guarding your personal information, managing nasty rumors, combating sexual harassment, gender discrimination, and racism. Overall, the construction culture has improved dramatically over the past 25-years. Developing both a thick skin and a sharp tongue are key tools needed to survive various jobsite antics. I hope you learn something from this short story. There are more to come. These short stories are now also available as Verbally Disastrous podcast episodes.
