Advice: Meaning Behind "You Have A Good Face"?
Hello Everyone!
How was your weekend, my friend? Did you have any fun plans? My fellow electrician friend canceled on our Saturday evening dinner plans. I opted to not be disappointed with the last minute cancellation. I proceeded to go out solo to another speakeasy pub in lower Manhattan called The Back Room. I learned that they served drinks in coffee cups during the Prohibition era. Because of this fact, they still serve drinks in these cups. You had to walk past this gate and down a set of stairs and up another set of stairs. It was very much a low key spot that was from that era when booze was banned here in the U.S. from 1920-1933. I can't believe that this country had an era when alcohol was banned!! On the way home, I stopped at American Whiskey for a cocktail before going home. I tried Basil Hayden for the first time. It needed to be cold since it was tough to drink at at room temperature. Now, it's back to the work week and Monday. Thankfully, it's quiet on my jobsite today. As I keep asking in each of my posts, please connect with my son John Collazo on his social media that is under his name for his "Call To Action Marketing" #CTAMarketing brand that he is building. For this blog post, I'm sharing with you a piece of Quora advice that I found to be amusing. It made me laugh so I felt compelled to respond. This topic is on someone telling another person that "you have a good face". I find comments like this to be highly immature and rather cruel. However, the person may be trying to save a bad situation by saying that the person has a nice face. I grew up with an evil step-mother who used to often say the cruelest things to me. One of her things was to constantly speak about what she didn't like about my body style. When I look back on my pictures as a young teen, I didn't look as bad as she claimed. It's a shame since it impacted me mentally as a teen and caused me to withdraw and not desire to socialize with my peers. It was good because feeling bad about myself helped me to avoid a teen pregnancy. However, it was bad since it impacted me well into my 20's. As a woman in my 40's, I have a much better version of self-esteem. As a girl with a muscular build, I know it's not everyone's cup of tea. I now have a "take it or leave it" vibe when it comes to interacting with the opposite sex. Thankfully, none of it kept me out of the relationship realm. I did get married when I was 18-years old and well out of high school and into the military. When I think back, if I didn't have those emotions hanging over my head, would I have still got married young? Any time parents are cruel to a teen, it will push that kid towards the first person who gives you love and attention. Then again, it was a highly energetic and intense connection so I'm sure it was going to happen regardless of my background. Because of that bad teen experience, I never feel a need to body shame anyone ever. If I ever hear anyone body shame my sons, that would fuel my rage. There is absolutely no reason to pollute a young person's mind like that. There is nothing good that comes from badgering a person over their body. I'm aware that some people confuse criticism with motivation. I find it highly unnecessary and it makes the commenter look like a straight asshole! Does the commenter think for a minute that the person being criticized has the body of a goddess when they really don't?? It's quite arrogant to think that a person's unsolicited opinion is the gold standard for all walks of life. I'm pretty sure that the average person with an undesirable body is quite aware of that fact. Highlighting it just works to mentally torment even further an already tortured soul. Know that words impact others deeper than you realize. If you disagree with my input, let me know exactly how you came to that conclusion? I would be very interested in your take if it is the total opposite of mine. To gain more clarity on my view, read the posed question and my response down below:
POSED QUESTION:
"He said "you have a good face." What does that mean?" -By Kawthar Mejjaoui
MY RESPONSE:
"Hahaha!! That saying can mean a polite way to say that you have a beautiful face but your body doesn’t match the face. Meaning that the person’s body can be very large, deformed, short, scarred, etc. This person could be trying to come up with a compliment to save themselves from a bad slip up of the tongue. It can also be said to someone as a cruel joke. Meanwhile, there is nothing wrong with their body. Remember that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. What one person praises as the best looking on the planet, another person could walk by and hardly notice the person being praised. I wish you luck on that one! :P #ConstructionTales #VerballyDisastrous” -By Leslie M. Jasper

Thanks for hooking me up with a slice of your time to read my blog post today. Let me know your thoughts on my position? Yes, I know that this is a sensitive subject for many. There are many who do not understand the struggle of this subject matter. This is one of those topics that I'm aware that I tackled it with more emotion than logic. If you have faced criticism on your body, how do you face it? I'm interested in reading views that are the polar opposite of mine. Now, you are aware by now that I'm not professing to have the best answer. I'm only offering a viewpoint that may not have been previously considered. Let me know your take down in the comment section below since other opinions are encouraged and embraced here on my website/blog. I recently shared my latest short story that has been loaded up to my Construction Tales-Told By A Woman Kindle Vella Library on Amazon. This is short story #11 entitled, "Juggling Motherhood & Working With The Tools". This short story covers my life as a widowed, single mother in the era when I juggled both motherhood and my career as a journeywoman electrician. I share the various challenges I faced and lessons learned along the way. The previous short story is entitled: #10: "Early Life Lessons & Characters To Meet As An Apprentice". I decided to write about some life lessons such as guarding your personal information, managing nasty rumors, combating sexual harassment, gender discrimination, and racism. Overall, the construction culture has improved dramatically over the past 25-years. Developing both a thick skin and a sharp tongue are key tools needed to survive various jobsite antics. I hope you learn something from this short story. There are more to come. These short stories are now also available as Verbally Disastrous podcast episodes.
